- Yes... it's with coconut and chopped nuts too. Pecans or walnuts depending upon the recipe.
Definately the coconut is what makes it German Chocolate.
allrecipes.com has a couple German Chocolate Frosting recipes... this is just one of them.
Frosting for German Chocolate Cake

"This is a yummy frosting to top a German chocolate cake with. It is a traditional recipe with coconut and walnuts."
INGREDIENTS
1 cup half-and-half
1/2 cup butter
1 cup white sugar
3 egg yolks
1 tablespoon cornstarch
1 cup flaked coconut
1/2 cup chopped walnuts
DIRECTIONS
In a medium saucepan, combine the half and half, butter, sugar, yolks and cornstarch. Bring to a boil over medium heat. Remove from the heat and stir in the coconut and walnuts. Cool to room temperature before frosting cake.

Coconut Pecan Frosting and Filling
3/4 cup evaporated milk
1/2 cup light brown sugar, firmly packed
1/2 cup granulated sugar
1/2 cup butter
1 teaspoon vanilla
3 egg yolks, slightly beaten
1 1/3 cups Baker's Angel Flake coconut (3-ounce can)
1 cup chopped pecans
In a saucepan over medium heat, combine milk, sugars, butter, and vanilla. Bring to a full boil, stirring constantly. Remove from heat (mixture might appear a bit curdled). Quickly stir a small amount of the hot liquid into the beaten egg yolks; return egg yolk mixture to the hot mixture in saucepan and blend well. Return to a boil, stirring constantly. Remove from heat and stir in coconut and pecans. Cool to spreading consistency, beating occasionally.

COCONUT PECAN FROSTING
1 can (14 oz.) sweetened condensed milk (not evaporated milk)
3 egg yolks, slightly beaten
1/2 cup (1 stick) butter or margarine
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
1-1/3 cups MOUNDS Sweetened Coconut Flakes
1 cup chopped pecans
Stir together sweetened condensed milk, egg yolks and butter in medium saucepan. Cook over low heat, stirring constantly, until mixture is thickened and bubbly. Remove from heat; stir in vanilla, coconut and pecans. Cool to room temperature. About 2-2/3 cups frosting.
